FAQ - Practical semester and semester abroad

The following information mainly relates to the status before WiSe 2021/22.

Here we answer all your questions about the practical semester and the semester abroad.

Semester abroad

Those who have an Erasmus+ grant have the possibility, under certain circumstances, to have the costs reimbursed as agreed in the grant agreement. For this purpose, students should contact their home universities. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has enacted measures for its scholarship holders abroad and at home that allow them to flexibly deal with the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. They can cancel or interrupt their stay abroad and return home, or continue their study abroad online from Germany. In cases where funding has expired but a return to the home country is not possible due to a lack of flight connections, the scholarship can be extended on a month-by-month basis.

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to come to college in May, you will fall under the hardship provisions.

If you have come to the university as an incoming student, you fall under the hardship regulations and the form of examination can be changed on application. 

Yes, in principle you can complete your semester abroad even though you have not yet passed your exams. You should contact your study abroad representative and explain the situation to him or her. If you are not able to take part in the exam, e.g. in May, you can apply for hardship. Your HHN international representative will support you in this. 

Yes. Undergraduate studies must be completed prior to study abroad.

Practical semester

The Senate has removed the corresponding regulation in the study and examination regulations for SoSe 21, so that first attempts can also be made in the practical study semester. Repeat examinations were previously also possible.

Via the Corona statutes it will be possible to reduce the necessary number of working days for a credit. However, so far this only applies to the May exam period. For the rest of the semester, this may still have to be decided by the Senate.

Hardship applications can now be submitted for internships abroad. Hardship applications can also be submitted for domestic internships. If unreasonable or unreasonable constellations arise, it is best to first contact the responsible examination board.
