The following information refers to the status before WiSe 2021/22. Currently, it is assumed that the examinations in WiSe 2021/22 will take place in presence.
Here we answer all your questions on the topics of exam form and exam procedure in times of Corona. We have summarized the topic of online exams in an extra block (see below).
General information about examinations and the form of examination
If you are in quarantine and therefore cannot take part in an attendance examination, this is considered an excused withdrawal, just as in the case of sick leave. In the case of quarantine, please report to the responsible examiner as well as to the responsible person in the Examination Office at the Academic Department. The official document (from the health office) requesting quarantine is valid as proof.
The university understands by “online examination” that writing a written exam under video surveillance.
Already now, oral online exams, online presentations or homework can be completed.
Other colleges or universities may use the term “online exams” differently.
We don’t know that yet.
No, you will be automatically registered for the exams you did not pass in May. Here it is important to deregister if you failed the exam in SoSe 21. NOT want to repeat.
The university offers online exams for this purpose.
Requests for changes in the form of examinations are made by agreement between students and lecturers and are submitted to the individual examination board for approval. This is thus resolved on a faculty-specific basis.
No, lecturers are generally not obliged to offer an alternative form of examination. If there is a case of hardship, the examiner must create an alternative within the framework of the hardship regulation. For this purpose, it is necessary for the students to contact the examiner or the examination board.
No, the decision does not lie with the lecturers, but with the examination board. A change of the examination form is not possible for January/February. For the exams in May, however, a change of the examination form can be approved by the examination board.
Yes, exceptions can be made. Please refer to the hardship regulations.
If you do not write your thesis in the Heilbronn area, the hardship regulation can definitely be applied and an alternative exam can be set. For this purpose, please contact your examination board.
Yes, the lecturers can submit an application to the examination board to change the form of the examination for the May examination period, but ultimately the decision to change the form does not lie with the lecturer, but with the examination board, so that you could get a term paper approved. Please note that the change of the examination form applies to all students of the course.
Until the announcement of the dates, the university teachers can make a change in the form of the examination. In order to avoid irritation, the examination schedule will only be put online after the deadline.
We regret this overlap, of course, but no consideration can be given in this regard, as the exams cannot be pushed back any further. However, this is also a fundamental problem that schools (high schools, etc.) have. There, too, no consideration can be taken for Ramadan.
Examination procedure
No, the registration period for SoSe21 remains as planned (April 16 to May 3).
An extension of the examination period in SoSe21 will probably not be possible, a postponement by one week would be more conceivable, but both are subject to the decision of the Senate.
This is instructor- or event-specific and cannot be said for all events. Basically, the quality of the events must be maintained.
Yes, the regulations that examinations must be completed beforehand have been suspended for SoSe21. You do not have to apply for a hardship case (see hardship case regulation point 4). An example of this would be if, for example, Math 1 has to be completed before Math 2.
The exams in May count as exams for WiSe20/21, therefore they can be repeated in SoSe21. The university takes over the failed attempts automatically for the exams of SoSe21. If students do not wish to attempt an exam in SoSe21, then they can opt out of the exams.
Yes, cancellations are possible up to 4 days before the individual exam.
- A subsequent registration for the examination achievements e.g. in WiSe 20/21 was only possible until March 8, 2021 without a fee.
- The fees amount to 10 € per exam. The maximum amount is 40 €.
- Subsequent registration is only possible if the examination performance has not yet begun.
- The dates for the registration period can be found in each semester’s schedule: https://www.hs-heilbronn.de/semesterterminplan
The free attempt policy has been extended through SoSe 21. For more information, please refer to the Corona Bylaws.
All exams must be offered every semester. If you have not passed the examinations in such a subject, we recommend that you contact the respective university lecturer to let them know that you would like to repeat the examination.
- Yes, in this example you can write the exams again in July. You would be automatically registered for the July exams if you had not passed the May exams.
- The Corona Bylaws currently regulate what happens if exams are not passed.
Officially, May 14 counts toward the exam period. HHN has tried to keep the day free.
In individual cases, exams may take place on that day.
Online exams
No, unless the camera is for the type of exam (e.g. an oral exam). The examiners may request that you activate your camera and microphone function for the purpose of establishing your identity. Another option is to hold your student ID or an official photo ID in front of the camera. Alternatively, you can establish your identity via the login of the examination systems (ILIAS or EvaExam).
If it is required for the exam format, then yes. For example, for an oral exam.
In the event of prolonged technical faults during the test, the procedure shall be in accordance with LHG §32b:
- (1) If the transmission of the examination task, the processing of the examination task, the transmission of the examination performance or the video supervision is demonstrably not technically feasible at the time of the examination in the case of an online examination under video supervision, the examination shall be terminated at the respective stage and the examination performance shall not be assessed. The examination attempt shall be deemed not to have been taken.
- (2) If the image or sound transmission in an online examination under video supervision is demonstrably temporarily disrupted, the examination shall be continued after the disruption has been rectified. If the technical malfunction persists so that the examination cannot be properly continued after assessment by the examiner, paragraph 1 sentences 1 and 2 shall apply accordingly.
Your examiner or individual candidates with technical problems regarding workstations at the university are reported to the examination planners of the faculties.
If it is determined during the rehearsal that the technical requirements of individual test takers are not met, this will be reported to the test planners of the faculties so that they can then organize workplaces at the university.
If you complete your exam completely online and have not made any handwritten notes, which are also irrelevant for the assessment, you do not have to hand them in. The respective lecturer will certainly let you know if there are any special regulations.
Please ask your examiner if this would be acceptable. If the examiner agrees, you then confirm with your sworn statement that the proposed solutions came from you.
With the word of honor you sign, among other things, that you have written the paper independently and only used the permitted aids and had no help. It also confirms that you are aware of the consequences of cheating or attempted cheating.
- Example: “I hereby declare that I have worked on the above-mentioned examination independently and without unauthorized outside help or the use of unauthorized aids. I know that the help of another person, the joint processing in a room or with the help of social media by groups, without group work being intended, constitutes impermissible outside help. I am also aware that the unmarked transfer of content from the Internet, e.g. by “copy and paste”, is an unauthorized aid. I am aware that in the event of deception or attempted deception, the examination will be graded as “failed” or “insufficient”.”
Yes, all examiners have been asked to do a trial run of the online exams. The purpose of this is to find out how much time it takes students to download an exam and then scan it back in and upload it after it has been completed, so that this time can be added to the time it takes to complete the exam.
Yes, in ILIAS some ways are shown how this works.
- In the event that the technical requirements are not met, the examiner can be contacted for solutions in individual cases.
- HHN asks for your cooperation and support. Otherwise, online exams cannot be conducted.
- While meeting the technical challenges is your responsibility, HHN has intentionally kept the technical requirements very low.
No, the Internet access cannot be controlled. Of course, there could be a traffic jam at the scanner, here either use the cell phone camera, if there is not enough time.
Yes. It is mandatory to perform the trial run.
There is no general answer to this question, because it depends on how the examiners decide. It is best to ask the respective lecturers directly.
In the event of prolonged technical faults during the test, the procedure shall be in accordance with LHG §32b:
- If the transmission of the examination task, the processing of the examination task, the transmission of the examination performance or the video supervision is demonstrably not technically feasible at the time of the examination in the case of an online examination under video supervision, the examination shall be terminated at the respective stage and the examination performance shall not be assessed. The examination attempt shall be deemed not to have been taken.
Please contact your examiner for this.
